Chapter

8

Greg drove me to the impound lot to get my car while Jackie went with Tiny and his gang to his place. At first, she wasn’t going to, but he promised her chili dogs so she changed her mind. The impound lot lay more in the center of the city, or what was once considered the very center until businesses and subdivisions rose up around it, making it more to the left of center, but it was downtown none-the-less. The ride was quiet, for the most part, but I could tell that Greg debated asking me to explain my comments from earlier, or to just let it slide. His more curious side won out, though, because about halfway to the impound lot he quit chewing on the corner of his lip and asked, “So, what is this all about?”

“What?” I replied.

“Your sudden worry about Detective Shorts.”

“It’s probably nothing,” I said.

A snort came from the backseat.

I turned around in my chair, straining the seatbelt to the point where it threatened to pull away from its hold. “Will you quit doing that?”

“Doing what?” demanded Jon.

“Laughing like that whenever someone says something that you don’t agree with or like,” I snapped at him.

“Then, quit saying things that sound stupid!”

“Stupid!” I almost crawled into the backseat, wanting to slap him, but remembered that you can’t hit a ghost.

“Mel, will you get back in your seat?” said Greg, a little worried about me getting angry at something he couldn’t see.

I stopped trying to get at Jon and settled back into that passenger seat, mumbling, “Sorry.”

“Well, you should be,” said Jon.

I clenched my fists.

“It’s okay,” soothed Greg, noticing my rising anger. I did not know if he heard Jon or not, but breathed in a deep lung-full of air, calming myself and unclenched my fists.

“You can be really annoying sometimes,” I said to Jon.

“You are not the first one to tell me that,” he replied.

Big surprise there. I just wanted him to stop with the snorting and the laughing… and the kicking of shins. “Do you think you could try to be a bit more respectful?” I asked him.

Silence followed for a moment before he answered. “I will try not to laugh at things that I think sound… unreasonable.”

Well, that was an improvement.

“What makes you think that this Detective Shorts guy might be in danger?” asked Jon.

“Didn’t you see the box of threats he has received over the years?”

“Uh… no. I wasn’t with you last night when that happened.”

“Not to be rude,” said Greg, while still driving the car “but do you two—I assume that we are not alone—mind including me in your conversation?”

“Well, excuse me,” said Jon, appearing in the back seat, and judging by Greg’s surprised look, he must have watched him materialize out of thin air.

“That’s better,” muttered Greg, taking several glances into the rear-view mirror to make sure that Jon wasn’t some sort of optical illusion.

“So you say this detective has gotten death threats?” asked Jon.

“Yes, I replied. “When I was at the gas station last night, I ran into Detective Shorts.
